Life of a Boarder

Read the story of Modernite Taimoor Hassan, a student living in the boarding house of Modernage, and explore the various activities he participates in throughout the day.

(5:00 AM – 6:30 AM)

I was enjoying a dream in which Babar Azam was about to score a century when my housemaster woke me up for prayer. Reluctantly, I left my warm bed, performed wudu, and proceeded to the mosque, where Qari Sahib was waiting. After offering my prayer and reciting the Holy Quran, I resisted the urge to go back to bed and reminded myself about revising for my Biology grand test.

(7:00 AM – 7:30 AM)

Fortunately, my clothes were already ironed, which saved me time. I tidied up my belongings, made my bed, and then headed to the dining hall, where I enjoyed a delicious breakfast prepared by the mess staff.

(7:45 AM – 8:00 AM)

The morning assembly featured a presentation by Class 9 on deforestation. The Vice Principal was monitoring the students, so I quickly made my way to the main ground to avoid being late. After the assembly, the proctors guided us to our classrooms, where our teacher was ready to distribute the grand test.

(8:00 AM – 9:00 AM)

The test was quite conceptual, but I felt confident since I had prepared well. I applied the techniques learned in a workshop on “How to Attempt Your Paper,” which helped me complete my test efficiently.

(9:00 AM – 9:30 AM)

During the first break, I attended a literary society meeting before grabbing some snacks from the canteen. The meeting was productive, and I felt excited about participating in upcoming activities of the society.

(10:00 AM – 10:30 AM)

At the end of Math class our teacher made an announcement that we will have a convention on Students Quality Circles in November. I couldn’t wait to enroll in the case study stream! Before the teacher left I had just enough time to tell him about a little problem I had with a formula. He promised to give me extra time after school.

(11:15 AM – 11:40 AM)

During the next break, I lined up at the cafeteria and bought a fresh milkshake to beat the heat. Meanwhile, my friends practiced for the inter-house Music Gala Competition with the music teacher.

(11:45 AM – 12:15 PM)

In our Chemistry lesson our teacher took us to the laboratory. Labs are always a fresh break from the routine lectures! Doing things practically is more fun than theoretical knowledge.

(12:15 PM – 12:25 PM)

During the third break, I visited the library to return a book and borrowed a new one. On my way back, I noticed staff putting up a bulletin board featuring last year’s Pak-Sri Lanka Youth Exchange Program. I intended to be a part of the next one!

(1:45 PM – 4:30 PM)

After school, I returned to the boarding house, took a refreshing shower, and offered my Zuhr prayer. Lunch in the dining hall was accompanied by soft background music, making the meal even more enjoyable. Then, I attended evening tutoring. My Math teacher was there, as he had promised, along with other teachers to help us with homework.

(4:30 PM – 7:00 PM)

I headed straight to the volleyball court, where our team, after losing for three days, finally won with full passion! Just as we were celebrating, our housemaster announced an exciting weekend camping trip, which thrilled everyone.

(7:15 PM – 10:30 PM)

After evening prayers, I revised the day’s lessons and attended an informal discussion session about responsible use of social media in the common room of our house. Dinner was a delicious meal of spicy biryani with tender roast, followed by kehwa. After Isha prayer and supervised study, I changed into my nightwear and lay down for a peaceful sleep, looking forward to another eventful day
